Weatherford sets track regional record, advances to state in two events

EVANSVILLE -- Greencastle junior Colleen Weatherford moved on to the IHSAA State Track Finals set for June 1 after winning the 1,600-meter run and placing second in the 800-meter run at the Evansville Regional Tuesday.

Weatherford posted a time of 5:06.39 to set a regional record in the 1,600. She dropped 10 seconds from her seed time to set the mark. She placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:13.36, a mere .12 behind first place.

The Greencastle relay team of Kara Birt, Paige Pickens, Carissa Johnson and Emily Crawley placed fourth in the 400-meter relay with a time of 51.21. Pickens was fifth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.05, while Stephanie Penturf was seventh in the shot put with a toss of 35-1.5. Carissa Johnson finished 11th in the long jump with a distance of 14-5.5.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Emily Gill, Alex Stoffregen, Kayla Cash and Weatherford placed 12th with a time of 10:50.77. Gill, Pickens, Crawley and Weatherford teamed up to placed 14th in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:28.94.

Cloverdale's Mariah Oetken placed fifth in the high jump after posting a height of 5-0, just two inches out of first place. Oetken also finished 16th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.76. Brooke Gray ran an 18.06 in the 100-meter hurdles, good enough for eighth place.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Claudia Monnett, Bailee Stevens, Angelica Manning and Amillia Nally placed eighth with a time of 10:29.24.

North Putnam sent two field event athletes to Evansville in Sam Lucas and Katie Welch. Lucas placed 10th in the shot put with a distance of 33-10.5, while Welch placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 97-9.

South Putnam freshman Ariel Higgins notched a top-10 finish, placing10th in the 300-meter hurdles after posting a time of 50:04. Teammate Jenna Geier made the trek south, but failed to post a height in the pole vault event.

Weatherford will compete at the IHSAA Girls' State Track Final June 1 at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex. She will run in the 1,600 at 6:35 p.m. and again in the 800 at 7:45 p.m.
