Nancy E. McFarland, 85, of Greencastle passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1926 in Smithville, Tenn., to Rev. James C. Elliott and Essie L. Welch Elliott.

Nancy was a graduate of Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn., and DePauw University.

She was a 50-plus year member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, where she shared her musical talents, and was a member of the Century Club and Garden Club.

Nancy, an accomplished pianist and organist, taught private music lessons to many generations of Putnam County residents. She began playing at the age of 12 as a church pianist for her father, often riding a horse to give her piano lessons.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, James C. Elliott II, William Elliott and Robert Elliott.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, John W. McFarland; four children, Kathryn Witham and husband Gary of Brazil, John W. McFarland III and wife Judith of Newark, N.J., Philip E. McFarland and wife Julia of Rockville, and N. Angela Green and husband Fredrick of Indianapolis; a brother, Fred W. Elliott and wife Lurline of Columbia, Tenn.; three sister-in-laws, Donna Elliott of Charlotte, Tenn., Peggy Elliott of Dickson, Tenn., and Betty Elliott of Charlotte, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will celebrate Nancy's Life on Wednesday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. P.T. Wilson officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 5 from 3-8 p.m. at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle.
