Dale Covert, 92, Greencastle, passed away on June 1, 2012 at the Putnam County Hospital. He was born on December 3, 1919 in Brown County, Indiana and was the son of the late Oliver and Mabel (Bailey) Covert.

He was united in marriage to Alice Wood on September 29, 1941 and she preceded him in death on February 24, 2008.

He is survived by his children, Sharon Lancaster and husband Earl, Greencastle, Diana Orr and husband Jim, Dodge Center, Minn., and James D. Covert and wife Cindy, Indianapolis, his sister, Eva Woolard, Anderson, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Alice Nees and Wanda Hinshaw, Jesse, Donald and James Covert.

Dale was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Leyte Island, Okinawa Campaigns and the occupation of Japan. He was a 1937 graduate of Greencastle High School. He was a life member of VFW 1550, Jesse M. Lee Post, Greencastle, American Legion Post 58, Greencastle, Greencastle Bowlers Association, Greencastle Bowlers Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Deer Creek Coon Hunters Club. He earned a private pilot's license in 1962. In 1996 he won the Seniors State Bowling Tournament.

He and his brother Don started and owned Covert Heating and Cooling for 40 years.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 4 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
