Fair Parade Committee seeks entries for 2012 event July 20

Monday, June 18, 2012

With a theme of "Sew It -- Grow It -- Show It" -- the 2012 Putnam County Fair Parade is in its final planning stages.

The Fair Parade Committee has been meeting since October to plan the annual Putnam County event scheduled to unfold in Greencastle on Friday evening, July 20.

Anyone who would like to enter a unit in the parade may talk to any member of the Fair Parade Committee (the group meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Sherwood Christian Church) or call Dorothy Edwards at 653-3885.

Other members of the Fair Parade Committee are Gerald Edwards, Ken Heeke, Perry Wainman, Randy and Lauri Neeley, Bob and Bev Farrow, Matt and Jessica Carter, Nancy Michael, Ashley Underwood, John Jackman, Don Mundy and Gordon Williams.

Serving as the 2012 parade marshals will be local residents Gene and Alice Beck, who were honored earlier this year as Putnam County Farmers of the Year at the 2012 Ag Day Breakfast.

The Becks are a four-generation family of Putnam County farmers, all of whom have been 10-year 4-H members.

Gene Beck previously served on the Putnam County Fair Board for a number of years and was president of the board for two terms.

"We are proud to have them as our parade marshals," Dorothy Edwards said. "We also are so happy to have the Arnold family with their beautiful Halfingers (horses) and carriage to carry the grand marshals along the parade route again this year."

The fair parade will make its way to the downtown reviewing stand (at the Masonic Temple) by 7 p.m. Starting time from the point and Washington and Wood streets and Indianapolis Road will be 6:30 p.m.

All units are expected to be lined up by 6 p.m. However, floats must be ready at the high school parking lot by 5 p.m. for judging.

Streets will be closed by 5 p.m., so all parade entries should be checked in by that time.

The route for this year's parade will be same as the route used last year. Proceeding west on Washington Street, the parade will turn south on Indiana Street and east onto Seminary Street to go back to the high school or Robe-Ann Park.

However, units that are going on to the fairgrounds or are disbanding at that point will turn north onto Indiana Street.

Those who would like to submit an entry for the parade may also submit it in writing by using a piece of 8-1/2 x 11 paper to be mailed to Dorothy J. Edwards, 3265 S. CR 200 West, Greencastle IN 46135.

Information to be included on that paper (on separate lines) is: Name of the entry; person in charge of the entry; contact person's address; contact person's phone number; type of unit; and parade unit size.
