U.S. 231 will close Monday for possibly two months
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that U.S. 231 in Greencastle will close at the intersection of Anderson Street, beginning Monday, July 30.
The closure is scheduled for two months, opening at the end of September.
The Anderson Street road reconstruction is a portion of the Stellar Communities project by the City of Greencastle. The limits are Locust Street on the west and U.S. 231/Bloomington Street on the east.
The old one-way eastbound street is being reconstructed as a two-way street to serve as a gateway to the campus of DePauw University.
The intersection of Anderson and U.S. 231 will be constructed using colored, stamped concrete pavement to clearly delineate it as the main entrance to the university. Other amenities include street lighting, sidewalks and landscaping.
This project was awarded to Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Inc. for $2.1 million. The work is expected to be completed in November of this year.
The official U.S. 231 detour follows U.S. 231 northbound to Veterans Memorial Highway westbound to South Jackson Street northbound and back to U.S. 231. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.
Meanwhile, a detour scheduled to begin this past Monday on Albin Pond Road has not yet begun.
Mayor Sue Murray said the contractor, JDH Contracting, Plainfield, is in need of a "right of entry" agreement with the Albin Pond owners association in order to work within the pond proper.
The president of the association is currently out of town but has been in contact with the city.
