Greencastle places 4th, Weatherford 2nd

VEEDERSBURG -- Fighting against 19 teams and 91 runners, the Greencastle girls' cross country team placed fourth overall at the Fountain Central Grand Prix Saturday.

The course was a mixture of flat grassy areas, narrow tree rooted turns and twists, a small creek and ended with a trek up a steep hill of 250 meters.

Colleen Weaterford finished in second place on the day with a time of 20:04. Kayla Cash finished in the top 15, placing 12th with a time of 22:27.

Hannah Brattain was 21st with a time of 23:20, while Sammi Haynes placed 23rd in a time of 23:27. Brittany Love secured a place in the top 30, finishing 28th with a time of 23:58. Alex Stoffregen was 34th in 24:22 and Jessica Tucker was 42nd in a time of 24:59.

"Our girls raced hard and smart," GHS head coach Garry Anderson said. "They took advantage of the terrain and all place to gain advantage on the other team's runners. Weatherford traded positions with the girl from Perry Meridian and Angola -- both very good runners.

Anderson said he was surprised and pleased with the performance of his next five finishers. He said they raced together and hopes they continue to do so during the season.

"Overall the race produced several bright spots, areas that need improvement of course and fine tuning in others," Anderson said.
