Spencer resigns, Lowe back as GHS volleyball coach

A familiar face will return the Greencastle volleyball bench tonight after the resignation of the previous coach earlier this week.

On Tuesday afternoon, Liz Spencer tendered her resignation as coach.

Veteran GHS coach Trish Lowe will lead the Lady Tiger Cubs for the remainder of the 2012 season.

Spencer was seven games into her third season at the helm of the program. No reason was disclosed for her resignation, she is still employed as a primary school physical education teacher.

With a game on Tuesday evening, administrators scrambled to fill the absence of a volleyball coach.

"The GCSC athletic director Kelly Lewis and assistant athletic director Zac Remsburg, along with the support of GHS principal Jennifer Shepherd, covered transportation and coaching duties with the team later that evening for the volleyball games at South Vermillion," Greencastle Superintendent Dr. Lori Richmond said.

Both the junior varsity and varsity won their Tuesday games over South Vermillion. Richmond had high praise for the administrators and athletes for their performance under adverse circumstances.

"I am pleased with the teamwork by our GCSC AD and administrative staff to work together in supporting our team during a time of transition," Richmond said. "Taking care of our students, promoting positive interactions, supporting teamwork on and off the court, and encouraging sportsmanship are always our priorities... and winning is simply a nice bonus to celebrate.

"GCSC has terrific coaches all around, and I truly appreciate their time and efforts with students."

Lowe, the Tzouanakis Intermediate School physical education teacher, spent a number of years at the helm of the GHS program before retiring from coaching following the 2009 season.

She began working with the team Wednesday afternoon and will lead them in a county matchup with Cloverdale this evening. The Lady Tiger Cubs have a 1-7 record.

"We appreciate the efforts from all of our present and past coaches and look forward to more success through the season," Richmond said.
