Tutoring at Gobin open house set for Thursday afternoon

School is back in session and that means it's time for "Tutoring at Gobin."

The after-school program for students in grades 1-5 is designed to help students build critical reading skills needed to keep up in school. Individual tutoring for older students is can be scheduled after 4 p.m.

An open house at Gobin on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 3-5 p.m. will give parents, students and friends a chance to meet the staff and learn how "Sound Effects" materials teach essential reading skills in new and different ways. Students can receive a free reading assessment.

The Gobin program begins the week of Sept. 10. Students come twice a week for a program which includes a snack, arts and crafts, individual reading and homework help and field trips.

The cost is $150 with reduced fees available.

Education Coordinator Lucy Wieland and Director Cathy Merrell head the staff of DePauw University tutors who teach essential reading skills, help with homework, and serve as mentors to students.

The Reading Improvement Center has served Putnam County students since 1987, and is a partner of United Way of Putnam County.
