PUTNAMVILLE -- An Indianapolis woman is lodged at the Putnam County Jail following a Sunday arrest on trafficking charges at Putnamville Correctional Facility.

On Sunday, correctional staffers observed 29-year-old Lakysha Simmons trafficking with offender Erik Edwards, 27, Indianapolis, during a visit to the facility.

Both individuals were detained and a package confiscated. Contents of the package were identified as a white powdery substance, pills and a green leafy substance.

Simmons was taken into custody and transported to Putnam County jail on preliminary charges of trafficking with an inmate, a Class C felony; possession of cocaine, a Class D felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony; and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor.

Edwards was placed in segregation and could face outside charges pending the outcome of an investigation. He is currently serving a sentence for robbery with a projected release date of Feb. 17, 2016.

"We will not tolerate criminal behavior in our prisons. It endangers the safety of those in our charge, staff, and other visitors," Superintendent Stanley Knight said. "I strongly urge that anyone contemplating this type of behavior take heed. We will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law."
