Shrum tied for 21st after first round

FRANKLIN -- With one round of golf remaining in her high school career, Cloverdale senior Sydney Shrum is poised to finish in a strong position at the state finals tournament on Saturday.

Shrum's first round 79 put her in a tie for 21st, 10 strokes behind leader Kelly Grassel of Chesterton.

"I was very pleased with how Sydney executed her game plan for that course," Cloverdale coach Matthew Langdon said. "She came out playing well right off the start, hitting her first six greens in regulation. She had a couple miscues that led to bogeys, but the plan was to stay away from the doubles all day and she accomplished that."

Shrum opened her round on the back nine, coming in with a plus-three 39.

A birdie on six and a par-saving five-footer on nine helped her reach her goal of breaking 80.

"She made many of those must-make five-footers all round," Langdon said. "She will go out with similar goals (Saturday), but it was nice to start off with a good round. (Saturday) is the day to play a little more aggressively and hopefully attempt to climb up the leaderboard."

Shrum will tee off at 8:48 a.m. today at The Legends in Franklin.
