Heavin making run for South Putnam board

Anthony Heavin MD is a candidate for an at-large position on the South Putnam Community School Baord.

Heavin has an extensive educational background that began as a student at Fillmore Elementary and continued at South Putnam High School.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from DePauw University, a Master of Science degree in physiology from Southern Illinois University and a medical degree from Southern Illinois University.

Heavin completed a three-year emergency medicine residency program from Michigan State University/Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies. He is board trained and board certified in emergency medicine and practices as an emergency medicine physician at Putnam County Hospital.

He is seeking a position on the school board because he knows the value of an education and believes in the students and their educators.

"The South Putnam community of Jefferson, Marion, Warren and Washington townships is tied together by our school corporation," Heavin said. "It is imperative that our school corporation continues to do its best to ensure that we are producing quality, well-rounded young people that are prepared to make a contribution to our community.

The candidate acknowledged the challenges facing all schools in the current era.

"There is no doubt that Indiana is struggling through an era of educational reform," Heavin said. "There is a fine line balancing fiscal responsibility while still meeting, and hopefully exceeding, student needs. These responsibilities and needs can be met with good communication, cooperation and commitment.

"Educating children in our community is the most important task put before us," he added. "If that task is completed well, today's students will be tomorrow's decision makers."

Anthony and his wife Karen live in Warren Township and have two children, Garrett and Brock. Garrett attends South Putnam Middle School and Brock attends South Putnam Central Elementary School.

"South Putnam is a great place to live and raise a family," Heavin said.

Anthony welcomes the opportunity to serve his community as a board member of the South Putnam Community School Corporation.
