Subway duo's act of kindness appreciated

On Saturday, Oct. 13, my siblings and I made a quick trip to the I-70 exit at Cloverdale and Greencastle to meet my brother, Bennett.

We were picking up an announcer's desk that he made for a charity event that I chair to help raise money for children with special needs. We stopped at the Subway along the interstate to get something to eat as well.

My brother Billy was celebrating his birthday on the 13th as well. He is mentally challenged from Fragile X Syndrome.

As he went through the line, I listened to Subway workers address him by name -- apparently they had heard my brother Bennett when he was helping Billy make choices for his sandwich. They must have heard us talking about it being his birthday as well.

As we were finishing our sandwiches, my brother Bennett saw the two workers put money in the register. Imagine our surprise when they walked up to Billy and gave him a cookie and wished him a happy birthday. Billy's eyes lit up with appreciation for their kind act.

I am a high school teacher. I constantly tell my students to do a random act of kindness for a stranger and see what happens. This small act of kindness will forever be appreciated.

Brandon Patterson and Bradley Johnson were the two young men who waited on us. The look in Billy's eyes when they did their kind deed was wonderful. I'd like to thank them for making his and our day.
