County Jail

Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

* At 12:35 p.m. Billy Lee Jones, 36, Cloverdale, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and probation violation.

* At 5:20 p.m. David Andrew Burger, 48, Fillmore, was lodged at the jail for invasion of privacy.

* At 5:24 p.m. Brandi M. Behning, 25, no city listed, was charged with failure to appear and driving with a suspended license.

* At 9:52 p.m. Andrew Jacob Krouse, 29, Greencastle, was held at the jail for contempt of court.

* At 11:55 p.m. Jennifer Lee O'Brien-Deerwester, 34, Greencastle, was booked in for operating while intoxicated, neglect of a dependent and probation violation.

City Police

Two 16-year-old juveniles were arrested Wednesday night on the grounds of the old Miller School building, Greencastle City Police reported.

Officer Nick Eastham was called to the scene at 8:45 p.m. after passersby reported suspicious subjects hanging around the vacant school building at 522 E. Anderson St.

One male juvenile is being charged with possession of marijuana, while a second male suspect is being charged with reckless possession of paraphernalia, police said.

Meanwhile, a hit-and-run accident Wednesday afternoon is being investigated by city officers.

The accident was reported at 12:15 p.m. at Washington and Arlington streets as Eleanor Leer, 74, Greencastle, was eastbound on Washington Street, driving a 2009 Ford Focus.

She told Officer Albert Epple that a large white car with a burgundy vinyl top ran the stopsign, struck the passenger side of her car and continued on northbound, leaving the scene of the accident. A witness corroborated her story, police said.

Damage to the Leer car was estimated at less than $1,000.

City officers investigated four other recent accidents.

-- At 2:24 p.m. Tuesday, a two-car mishap was reported at Bloomington and Martinsville streets as Morgan Christy, 18, Greencastle, was stopped on Martinsville Street, waiting to turn onto Bloomington in a 2004 Dodge Neon.

Another vehicle turning east off Bloomington Street reportedly blocked her view of traffic as Christy turned left, pulling into the path of a northbound 1995 Ford Mustang, driven by Scott A. Moody, 47, Indianapolis.

Officer Darrel Bunten estimated total damage at $2,500-$5,000.

-- At 1:05 p.m. Oct. 13, a two-vehicle accident was reported at Jackson and Washington streets as Deputy Matthew D. Biggs, 24, Russellville, was in a 2006 Dodge Putnam County Sheriff's Department patrol car in the northbound turn lane, approaching Jackson Street

Baylee Levi Hanlon, 17, Greencastle, was in the southbound turn lane, approaching Jackson in a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup when he reportedly merged into the northbound lane and struck the PCSD vehicle.

Officer Jeff Modlin estimated total damage at $2,500-$5,000.

-- At 1:05 p.m. Oct. 12, a minor mishap was reported on the parking lot at the Speedway station, 1157 Indianapolis Rd.

Thomas Gurchiek, 73, Brazil, was backing a 1997 Dodge Dakota from a parking space and struck a 1990 BMW, driven by Marvin Schoultes II, 70, Greencastle.

Sgt. Terry Eastham estimated total damage at $2,500-$5,000.

-- At 8:24 a.m. Oct. 9, a one-car accident was blamed on the glare of the morning sun as Daniel A. Broadstreet, 63, Greencastle, was eastbound in a 1992 Buick Riviera.

Because of the sun, Broadstreet missed the curve at the East Washington Street-Indianapolis Road "Y" intersection, and his car struck the barrier at the west end of the liquor store property.

Sgt. Eastham estimated damage to the Broadstreet car at $2,500-$5,000.

Sheriff's Department

On Friday, Oct. 12 at 2:52 p.m. Doris E. Ratcliff, 72, Fillmore, was traveling on County Road 675 East when she said she missed her turn. Ratcliff said she stopped and turned on her lights, then checked her mirrors.

She said she didn't see anything behind her and started to back up. In backing up, she struck the 2001 Saturn LS driven by Ginger L. Tyler, 43, Greencastle.

Damages were estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department went on several runs recently.

* On Monday, Oct. 15 at 3:42 p.m., then again on Tuesday at 12:23 a.m., crews went to 414 S. Indiana St. for an alarm set off due to burnt food. They cleared the scene at 3:54 p.m. and 12:33 a.m., respectively.

* On Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8:25 a.m. they were dispatched to 98 N. 10th St. but disregarded prior to leaving the station.

At 2:31 p.m. firefighters went to 107 W. Hanna St. for an alarm set off during cooking. They were in service at 2:40 p.m.

At 8:51 p.m. crews were sent to 300 S. 10th St. in response to a small electrical fire. The fire was extinguished prior to departmental arrival, and they returned to the station at 9:45 p.m.

* On Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 1:47 pm. they were dispatched to 915 S. Zinc Mill Rd., but disregarded before leaving the station.

* On Thursday, Oct. 18 at 12:55 p.m. crews were sent to 1542 S. Bloomington St., but disregarded en route at 1:04 p.m.

At 2:08 p.m. firefighters went to West Washington and Jefferson streets for a fluid cleanup that resulted from a traffic accident. They returned to station at 2:50 p.m.

At 2:50 p.m. they were dispatched to 300 S. 10th St. for a medical run. They were in service at 3:08 p.m.
