Sheriff's Department

* On Tuesday, October 16 at 2 p.m. Brad W. Smythe, 43, New Carlisle, was driving a 2007 Ryder rental truck southbound on U.S. 231 North near County Road 1400 N.

Smythe said an oncoming vehicle was driving left of the centerline so he swerved to avoid a collision.

The truck went off the side of the road and collided into guardrail just south of County Road 1400 North.

Estimated damage is listed between $50,001-$100,000.

* An Illinois man was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated following a Saturday, Oct. 20 accident at U.S. 231 and U.S. 36.

At 9:03 p.m. Jerre L. Stonecipher, 63, Champaign, Ill., said he could not stop his northbound 2000 Honda S2000 while approaching the intersection, rear ending the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Cory A. Riggs, 18, Rockville, who was stopped, waiting for the light to change in the left turn lane.

Riggs said he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the car approaching at a high rate of speed before it struck the rear end of his SUV.

A portable breath test showed Stonecipher's blood alcohol content to be .27. The certified test at the Putnam County Jail showed his BAC as .24, three times the legal limit.

Stonecipher was booked into the Putnam County Jail at 10:26 p.m. for operating while intoxicated and public intoxication.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* A three-car accident occurred on U.S. 231 in Cloverdale on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Crystal Hornaday, 30, Brazil, was northbound in her 2000 gold Chevrolet Cavalier, stopped on U.S. 231 waiting for traffic to clear so she could make a left turn onto County Road 1200 South.

Carey Allen, 44, Martinsville, was behind Hornaday, slowing to avoid a collision.

Allen was struck from behind by Rylie Vauters, 16, Spencer, who said after the accident that she was following too closely to avoid a collision.

Vauters, driving a 2000 silver Pontiac Sunfire, struck Allen. The momentum sent Allen's 2004 gray Dodge Dakota in Hornaday.

Emmy Allen, 16, suffered minor head injuries as a passenger in Allen's truck.

Hornaday said she had her left turn signal activated, but Allen said she did not notice.

Police reports indicate that the front signal of Hornaday's vehicle was functional, but the rear left signal was not.

No charges have been filed.

Estimated damage is listed at $5,001-$10,000.

* On Sunday, Oct. 21 at 8:28 p.m. Andrew J. Patrick, 21, Plainfield, was stopped at the stoplight on Stardust Road in a 2012 Scion xB. He was the second car waiting to turn north on U.S. 231.

Patrick said the light turned green, but as he started into traffic he was struck in the driver's side by Dallas Scales, 31, Greencastle, driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Scales said he was southbound when he noticed the light turn yellow. He tried to beat the light and hit Patrick's car.

A witness who was driving the car in front of Patrick's said as he turned northbound, he was almost struck by Scales, but was able to get out of the way.

The witness said he had the green light and both northbound and southbound lights were red.
