DePauw University Orchestra to play Sunday

Saturday, October 27, 2012

On Sunday, Oct. 28, the DePauw University Orchestra will start off ArtsFest 2012 with a concert in Kresge Auditorium at the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Tickets will be $3 for general admission and free for Putnam County students and senior citizens.

The topic for this year's festival is "Art and the Other." The DPU Orchestra will present some concert family favorites and a few Halloween treats as well.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Walt Disney's original version of the animated feature film "Fantasia" is an example of what will be played. It will be paired with Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" which is a children's concert favorite. Pieces from the film "Spiderman" will also be featured.

"It's a pleasure to integrate our concerts with the general events that surround the annual celebration of thought and activity set out by ArtsFest," Orcenith Smith, conductor of the orchestra, said.

"Certainly, this concert is an important community outreach opportunity. We take music that we study by the great composers and shape a program that presents it in a way that is accessible to children and families but what could be more fun than also inviting future generations to join you in enjoying the music you love."

DePauw University Orchestra concerts are broadcast live on WGRE and on its website wgre.org/listen.asp.

Tickets can be purchased at depauw.edu/music/tickets.
