DePauw Chorus concert to feature gypsy songs tonight

Monday, October 29, 2012

Members of the DePauw University Chorus invites the community to join them for a passion-filled evening of gypsy music as part of the School of Music's contribution to ArtsFest 2012.

The choral concert will take place in Kresge Auditorium at the Green Center for the Performing Arts, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday (tonight).

"Gypsies, or more appropriately, the Romani people, are a broadly dispersed ethnic group living among other ethnic groups throughout Europe and the world," Greg Ristow, director of university choirs, explained.

"Wherever they live, they are considered to be 'others,' yet the foreignness of their music and customs has inspired classical composers to write countless pieces in imitation of and homage to these exotic sounds."

The theme of ArtsFest 2012is "Art and the Other."

Included on the program will be the George Bizet's famous "Habanera" from the opera Carmen, to be sung by Claire Wilkinson, a DePauw senior and past winner of the school's annual concerto competition; Johannes Brahms's Zigeunerlieder, opus 103; and "Niska Banja," a traditional Serbian gypsy song arranged by Nick Page.

General admission tickets to the concert are $3. Admission for all Putnam County students and for seniors over 65 is free.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.depauw.edu/music/tickets.
