Putnam County to host conversation on college success

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers will join area business, education and community leaders from Putnam County on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in the Memorial Student Union Building ballroom. Lubbers will spotlight regional efforts that promote education and training beyond high school.

This event is part of the "Community Conversations on College Success series, taking place across Indiana this fall in partnership with the state and local College Success Coalitions.

"Now more than ever Hoosiers recognize that a college credential is their passport to opportunity and prosperity," said Lubbers. "Making good on the promise of college completion requires unprecedented engagement and collaboration from across Indiana at all levels."

The "Community Conversation on College Success" event will feature:

* Meeting with Putnam County College Success Coalition: Putnam County is part of a growing statewide network of organizations working to increase college readiness and education attainment. To date, the College Success Coalitions have recruited nearly 1,000 local organizations and implemented more than 1,000 targeted activities that help students plan, prepare and pay for college success.

* "First Generation" film screening: A free public screening of the award-winning documentary film will be held for area students, families and community members from 6-8 p.m. at the Memorial Student Union Building Ballroom at DePauw University. The film tells the story of four high school students who set out to become the first members of their families to earn a college degree.

* Community conversation: Following the film screening, attendees will be given the opportunity to discuss their reactions to the film, share resources for students and families, and consider next steps the community can take to increase college completion and student access.

The "Community Conversation on College Success" as part of an ongoing public engagement effort designed to increase the education level of all Hoosiers.
