CLOVERDALE -- Coming off a big win on Saturday, the Cloverdale girls' basketball team hoped to carry momentum forward for the rest of the year.

The momentum was halted on Monday when the Clovers lost a close game to Eastern Greene, 47-41.

Cloverdale had four starters get forced to the bench with foul trouble in the first half, but still entered the break in a 23-23 tie.

Senior Sydney Shrum had seven of her team-high 11 points at the break.

The Clovers shot only 23.8 percent in the second half, but held a slight advantage much of the half until Thunderbirds guard Alex Dubois sank a pair of free throws with 3:29 left in the fourth quarter to giver her team a 37-35 lead.

CHS had coach Matthew Langdon said after his team needed to put Eastern Greene away earlier.

The Thunderbirds' sixth team foul came in the third quarter, which put Cloverdale in the bonus but the team couldn't capitalize.

Senior Paige Gruener finished with nine points and made 6-of-8 free throws in the second half.

Sophomore Taylor Clark gave the Clovers a spark off the bench, finishing with four points and tallying four blocks in the second half.

"When you let a team like that hang around, a hungry team like that, they're going to take advantage of it," Langdon said. "We let them hang around too long."

The Clovers return to action Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Turkey Run.

"We had many chances to put them away, and we just didn't make them," Langdon said. "We weren't able to adjust to the game."
