North Putnam girls' top South Vermillion to notch first win

The North Putnam girls' basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday, defeating South Vermillion 48-43.

The Cougars (1-5) were led in scoring by Morgan Smith with 12 points. Bethany Wiatt added 10. Sam Lucas (nine), Madi Asbell (nine) Cayla Kientz (four), Alex Land (two) and Taylor Nauert (two) each added scores.

The team played its most balanced game of the season, North Putnam coach Curtis Lawrence said.

Besides balanced scoring, the Cougars out rebounded the Wildcats 31-23, led by Lucas' nine and Asbell's eight.

The team also committed just 14 turnovers, Lawrence said.

North Putnam hit 9-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Riverton Parke. JV begins at 6 p.m.



The North Putnam JV team also picked up its first win against South Vermillion, 32-28. Adri Millican led the team with 11 points. Jenny Heron (eight), Kasie Reeves (four), Kaitlin Mindiola (two), Sierra Spencer (two), Jazzmin Laffin (two), Taylor Nauert (two) and Kayla Clodfelter (one) also scored.
