'Hoosier Holidays' concert to benefit homeless shelters

Local folk artist Bobbie Lancaster has organized the "Hoosier Holidays: Songs and Stories of the Season" for Friday evening at The Inn at DePauw.

Local music fans can get their Christmas present early on Friday when The Inn at DePauw presents "Hoosier Holidays: Songs and Stories of the Season."

The 7:30 p.m. show in the Inn's ballroom will feature seven acts: Tim Grimm and Jan Lucas, Bobbie Lancaster, Him & Her, Anthony Mullis, Cara Jean Marcy, The Banisters and The Arrests.

Lancaster has teamed with Grimm, who has also organized a pair of Hoosier Holidays shows in Columbus this December, to bring the series to Greencastle.

Besides a good show, Lancaster is hoping to make a difference in the Putnam County community with the event.

"I'm hoping for three things," Lancaster said. "First to collect an abundance of blankets to distribute to the area shelters that are taking our Putnam County residents, second to have a great turnout for this show -- which is the first one I've tried to bring to town since moving to Greencastle -- and third that this show might lay the foundation to bring other similar shows to town."

Lancaster said the show's blanket drive was inspired by local eight-year-old Jacob Beadles, who spoke about wanting to do something about homelessness.

"During recent trips to Chicago and Indianapolis I saw a lot of homeless people and I've been feeling led to make some blankets for the homeless," Beadles said. "I want to be able to get the material to make blankets to take to some local shelters and possibly hand some out myself.

"I told my parents and some friends of theirs at my church about my wish and they are excited to help. Miss Bobbie (Lancaster) told me she and her friends might be able to help me too. This made me feel more confident that we can do this."

Tickets for the show are $15 in advance and $18 the day of the show. However, bringing a blanket to the show will reduce the door price to $15.

Tickets for students under 18 years old are $10.

Doors for the show will open at 6:30 p.m.

The Beadles family will be distributing the blankets to area homeless shelters, many of which are taking in Putnam County residents.

"If we are flooded with blankets (and we hope we will be), we have several members of the Greencastle Civic League who have volunteered to assist in the distribution effort," Lancaster said.

Advance tickets are available now at The Inn at DePauw and at Studio B Gallery and Gift Shop, 302 E. Washington St.
