A two-car accident Dec. 20 on Indianapolis Road not only caused property damage in excess of $10,000 but also resulted in charges being filed against one driver and the subsequent arrest of her husband.

The mishap occurred at 11:08 a.m. at Indianapolis Road and Calbert Way, City Police reported, as Bethany Paul 22, Greencastle, was eastbound, driving a 2003 Mazda, and collided with a 2006 Lexus, driven by Brandon Pershing, 17, Greencastle. Pershing was westbound on State Road 240, had entered the left turn lane and began to turn as a white van was turning north onto Calbert Way.

He told Officer Darrel Bunten, who was assisted by Assistant Chief Brain Hopkins, that he did not see the oncoming Paul car because of the turning van and could not avoid the collision.

Paul and her 14-month-old daughter were injured in the crash and transported to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance.

However, charges are pending against Paul for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, neglect of a dependent, possession of syringes and possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation also reportedly led to the Paul residence at 700 Ravenswood Drive, Greencastle, where Anthony Michael Paul, 21, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and neglect of a dependent. He was lodged in the Putnam County Jail at 3:45 p.m.

Two other recent accidents were reported by GPD.

The collision resulted in an estimated $2,500-$5,000 damage.

-- At 12:05 p.m. Dec. 21, a two-vehicle mishap was reported at U.S. 231 South and State Road 240.

Officer Albert Epple noted that Joshua McAfee, 28, Poland, had stopped his 2000 Buick LeSabre at the stoplight southbound on U.S. 231 when it was struck from behind by a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by Robert E. Stinson, 19, Greencastle.

The Stinson vehicle reportedly slid on slush in the roadway, striking the car in the rear and resulting in an estimated $5,000-$10,000 damage.

* On Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 11:05 a.m. Tyrone R. Gobel, 38, Greencastle, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

He hit snow and ice in a curve and the car ran off the road, hitting an arrow sign for a curve.

* On Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 6:06 p.m. Cari L. Bills, 33, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix attempting to turn left across traffic into the driveway at 606 N. Main St., Cloverdale. Kindra N. Martin, 21, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2002 Nissan Sentra.

As Bills attempted to turn, she pulled in front of Martin's vehicle. The impact caused Bills' car to spin around, coming to rest facing north in the northbound lane.

No injuries were reported.

* On Thursday, Dec. 20 at 6:44 a.m. Greg W. Rentschler, 53, Center Point, was westbound on Interstate 70 at approximately the 32-mile marker in a 2001 Ford ZX3.

* At 7:43 a.m. Alice Sutherlin, 55, Cloverdale, was eastbound on State Road 42 in a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado and had stopped to turn left onto Doe Creek Road. Garrett M. Brackin, 17, Poland, was eastbound on State Road 42 following Sutherlin in a 2001 Honda Civic LX.

Brackin said he saw Sutherlin's truck as he crested the hill but was unable to stop.

Deputy Tom Helmer estimated damages as $5,001-$10,000.

* At 10:25 p.m. Jess D. Kaiser, 27, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 325 West in 2002 Nissan when he lost control due to snow and ice.

The vehicle left the road and hit a mailbox at 4898 S. CR 325 West as well as three fence posts and approximately 60 feet of fence.

* On Friday, Dec. 21 at 5:12 p.m. Frank D. Kuckewich, 60, Terre Haute, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2005 Ford Escape XLS. As he approached the Butler Bottoms just north of U.S. 40, the wind pushed the vehicle and due to snow-covered roads, he lost control and went into a ditch.

As Kuckewich's vehicle was stuck, it was hit by a 2005 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer drive by Pal Preet Labana, 28, Quebec, Canada.

Labana lost control of his vehicle, causing it to jackknife and hit Kuckewich's vehicle.

Deputy Troyer was unable to get much information from Labana due to a language barrier.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 9:20 a.m. Jordan P. Cole, 20, Indianapolis, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2003 International straight truck. He advised he was traveling 20-30 mph due to road conditions and was following another vehicle.

Cole said the other vehicle started to slow down and he applied his brakes, causing the rear tires to lose traction and start to slide. The rear of the vehicle slid to the right and as the driver attempted to gain control, he left the travel portion of the road and drove onto the soft grass shoulder.

The weight of the vehicle, which was full of ice bags, caused the tires to sink into the grass and the vehicle to roll onto its top.

Cole was temporarily trapped in the vehicle due to his seat belt, but a passing motorist stopped and cut the belt, allowing the driver to exit uninjured.

Helmer estimated damages at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 9:49 a.m. Amanda L. Rady, 27, Greencastle, was rounding a curve on County Road 525 South in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

* At 10:28 p.m. Karen J. Purvis, 60, Coatesville, was eastbound on County Road 150 North at approximately 600 East in a 2011 Toyota 4Runner.

Purvis appeared to have lost control due to ice, leaving the south side and entering a ditch. After hitting the ditch, the vehicle did a 360 and became inverted, coming to rest on its passenger side near CSX railroad tracks.

Deputy Craig Sibbitt advised dispatch to have CSX stop train travel until the driver could be extricated.

Purvis was removed from the vehicle by the Fillmore Fire Department and refused medical attention.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.
