INDIANAPOLIS -- The South Putnam and Cloverdale wrestling teams competed in the Ben Davis Giant 16 Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles finished in sixth place while the Clovers finished in 15th place.

The Eagles had a great day at the event sending three of their wrestlers into the championship round.

Senior Tanner Thompson and junior Rudy Harris each won, while junior Jacob Williams took second place for Eagles in the final rounds of the meet.

Thompson also received the award for Most Valuable Wrestler at the meet, having accumulated the most points on the day. The team had already left the building and Thompson had to be called back in to get his medal.

In the 220-pound championship match, Williams was leading 10-1 when he was disqualified for a controversial head-butting call that left his opponent cut.

Earlier in the match Williams had been violently slammed face-first onto the mat.

South Putnam also had several wrestlers placing in the individual weight classes.

Junior Nick Hevy placed fourth in the 113 weight class, freshman Jacob Lorimer placed seventh in the 120 weight class, senior Jacob Camacho placed fourth in the 138 weight class, junior Joe Waters placed fifth in the 152 weight class and junior Lane Hacker placed third in the 285 weight class.

Eagles coach Josh Hendrickson seemed very pleased by the team efforts and how well they did in the overall meet and in the individual standing.

Cloverdale had a rough start to the meet when junior Cody Stout (182) suffered an injury. The Clovers stayed strong, though, and placed 15th in standings.

CHS had four wrestlers place in the final round of the meet. Sophomore Jake Waycott placed third in the 126 weight class, sophomore Max Secret placed seventh in the 145 weight class, junior Wade Warren placed fourth in the 152 weight class and junior Jonathan Smith placed seventh in the 160 weight class.

Later on, junior Cody Stout was said to have dislocated his elbow and after going to a hospital the elbow was put back in place.

Cloverdale is back in action on Saturday at the South Vermillion Invite at 9 a.m.

The Eagles are off until the West Central Conference meet on Jan. 12 at Cloverdale.
