South Putnam surges past Eels

EMINENCE -- The South Putnam boys' basketball team came out with a big 61-51 win over Eminence on Friday.

It was the team's first game since a Dec. 14 loss to Rockville, and their first win since beating West Central Conference rival Cascade on Dec. 7.

"I thought our kids played really well," SPHS coach Troy Burgess said. "We've still got to handle pressure better. We had 14 turnovers, which is still too many."

The Eagles lead after each quarter in the game.

The teams each went on runs, Burgess said, but SPHS kept the Eels from getting any closer than eight or ten points for most of the second half.

Junior Trey Moore finished with a game-high 28 points and senior Sawyer Arnold added 19 of his own.

"It's not an easy place to play," Burgess said. "I was really proud of our kids."

The Eagles' front court was in foul trouble early, he said, but the bench unit kept the team going until the starters could return.

Senior power forward Justin Bumgardner finished with seven points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles will be back tonight when the travel to Edgewood at 7:30 p.m.
