Walking Wednesdays (and Fridays!) starting soon

Monday, January 7, 2013

Just in time for your New Year's resolutions, Putnam County Health Coalition and the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring an indoor walking program that is free and open to all.

Who knows what kind of weather we will experience this year. But whether it is mild like last year, or cold and snowy like we've had the last few weeks, there is no excuse not to be active when nearly anyone can put one foot in front of the other.

Last year we were fortunate to have a very mild winter where it was possible to continue walking outdoors almost every day. If it is nice again this year, we are very lucky to have a many miles of nice walking paths throughout Greencastle and Putnam County. However, if the weather is cold and snowy or icy it will be a bit more challenging.

Besides worrying about warmth and safety, some people prefer to have company when they exercise. So if you like to walk for exercise and would like to join others to walk indoors during the winter, mark your calendar and plan to join the Winter Edition of Walking Wednesdays (and Fridays!) each Wednesday and Friday morning, starting on Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 7-9 a.m. at the DePauw Tennis and Track Center. Come alone or bring a friend or family member for a non-timed walk. You can go at your own pace and walk just as far as you like. Set your own goals and work to achieve them.

Remember that physical activity is just as important as eating right to ensure good health. Experts recommend that we try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least three days a week.

For more information about the Winter Edition of Walking Wednesdays contact Troy Scott at 653-3395 or tscott@cityofgreencastle.com.

You can register ahead of time or just show up at the indoor track at DePauw's Tennis and Track Center any Wednesday or Friday morning from Jan. 9-Feb. 27.
