John D. Pershing

John D. Pershing, 88, of Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.

John was born on Dec. 2, 1924 in Elnora, Ind., to John Pershing and Isabelle Owen Pershing.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the Timberwolves 104th Infantry Division.

In 1951 he graduated from Butler University School of Pharmacy.

He was a pharmacist at Coan Pharmacy in Greencastle from 1957 until his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Pershing was a member of First Baptist Church in Greencastle, where he had served as a deacon and trustee.

His parents and two brothers, Owen Pershing and Max Pershing, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Louise VanDeventer Pershing; three daughters, Pam Curran and husband Lon of Orland Park, Ill., Dede Black and husband Terry of Greencastle, and Joni Shelton and husband Lance of Greencastle; a granddaughter, Julie Black; a step-grandson, Brian Curran; and a nephew, Charles Pershing and wife Gwen of Noblesville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Randy McNeely officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, and on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
