Clovers finish 10th at Avon

AVON -- Cloverdale took tenth place at the Avon wrestling sectional of Saturday. The Clovers had tough luck in the sectionals, but a few of the Clovers made it into the final rounds of the meet.

Sophomore Jake Waycott placed fifth in the 126 weight class and junior Wade Warren took fifth in the 152 weight class. These two Clovers will be alternates for next week's regional.

"You don't hope something happens to someone in regionals," Clovers coach Steven Livingston said. "(But) we are going to work with them so they will be prepared if something does happen."

The young Clovers pressed, Livingston said, feeling pressure to perform due to inexperience.

Lack of experience wasn't the only thing that contributed to their loss. They also forfeited a lot of weight classes, which hurt their chance of placing higher as a team.

"Overall I don't think we wrestled well today and that I can attribute to our inexperience as a team," Livingston said. "A lot of our younger kids felt the pressure of wrestling in sectionals and (while) you are hoping they rise to the occasion to wrestle well in a tournament like this, we just didn't. And it just a credit to a lack of experience.

"We hope a lot of the same kids come back (next year) and we pick up some new ones so that way when we come back here they won't feel that pressure and hopefully wrestle to their fullest."

In the fifth-place match for the 152 weight class, Warren wrestled against Avon's sophomore David Frank. Warren won the match 7-2 in points; he had one take down, one escape and two reversals that contributed to his win.

Waycott won his fifth-place match by default.
