Monday Jam: In my mind I'm always going home
On Sunday, Joe Diffie became the first musician on my radar to succumb to COVID-19. It makes me sad for Mr. Diffie himself and those who loved and knew him best.
With him also goes a small piece of my childhood. For a time in the early-to-mid-'90s, you couldn't turn on country radio without hearing a Joe Diffie tune in the first half hour.
He was especially good at fun songs like "Third Rock from the Sun," "If the Devil Danced in Empty Pockets" and "Pickup Man."
"John Deere Green" was also fun but sneaky in its poignancy.
But in the wake of Diffie's passing, I chose "Home," his debut single. It's a song I've not heard in years, and it means a whole lot more to me now that I'm pushing 40.
In my mind, I'm always going home.
Isn't that true for us all?
