LEBANON -- The South Putnam girls' golf team finished 11th out of 15 teams in Saturday's Western Boone Invitational at Cool Lake Golf Club. Heather Hughes led the Eagle effort with an 83. A year after losing six seniors, a team could enter the dreaded "rebuilding" mode. But as Greencastle boys' tennis rebuilds, they might as well pick up some wins along the way. The Tiger Cubs defeated Speedway 4-1 Tuesday night. Given that these are the only two WCC schools with boys' tennis programs, the Cubs also became the conference champions with the victory...

It didn't take long for Greencastle to seize an advantage in its girls' soccer matchup with South Vermillion. The Tiger Cubs grabbed some early momentum and rolled to a 12-0 win over the Wildcats Tuesday. Greencastle jumped on the Wildcats early and had three players record hat tricks in the win. Saturday proved to be a great day for Greencastle's Hannah Spencer. In Greencastle's match with Mooresville, Spencer connected on two goals, which put her at 100 goals for her high school career, a rare feat for a high school athlete. Putnam County Jail Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently. Robert Campbell, 30, Indianapolis, was booked at 3:11 p.m. Friday for three counts of failure to appear. Ciera Pedrey, 20, Roachdale, was booked at 3:35 p.m. for failure to appear and petition to revoke probation...

Susan Wertz Cozart, 51, of Rye, Colo., passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 24, 2008 near her home. She was born on Dec. 17, 1956 in Beech Grove to Glenn E. and Delores Hyten Wertz. Sue was a graduate of Andover High School in Michigan and Western Michigan University...

Eleanor "Lucille" Gill, 77, of Seymour, died Sept. 1, 2008 at Schneck Medical Center. Born in Washington, Ind. on Sept. 11, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Laura (Stumpp) Shepard. She married L. Thurman Gill on Nov. 16, 1957, and he survives...

Just days before it was scheduled to go up for sherriff's sale, Greencastle's Victorian Day Spa caught fire Tuesday night, causing an estimated $40,000 to $60,000. Putnam County Commissioners Gene Beck, Kristina Warren and Jim Baird tabled approving bids for work on the courthouse roof until their next meeting on Sept. 15. "I want at least four or five days to digest this stuff before okaying it," said Baird. The bids are for repairs to the courthouse roof and other damaged areas.
