SPEEDWAY -- Strong winds and rain delayed the start of Tuesday's sectional finale between South Putnam and Cascade. Two innings in, the game was halted once more due to rain, but it only prolonged the inevitable for No. 3 ranked Cascade. South Putnam came back after the break and played a controlled game that resulted in the Eagles capturing the Class 2A No. 46 sectional title...

A trial date has been set for a Fillmore man who has been in the Putnam County Jail since his March 31 arrest in connection with a January burglary at a Cloverdale residence. Mark A. Anderson, 20, is charged with Class B felony conspiracy to commit burglary and Class D felony conspiracy to commit theft. If convicted on both charges, Anderson could be sentenced to as many as 23 years behind bars...

Freda E. Minkler, 86, of Greencastle, formerly of Poland, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Millpond Health Campus. Born Sept. 22, 1922 in Putnam County, she was the daughter of Earl and Lela Arnold Cash. She was a 1940 graduate of Fillmore High School. She married Wayne Robert Nelson in April 1941, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1970. She married George W. Minkler on June 9, 1973, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 2007...

Phyllis Deane Hurst, 78, of Martinsville, died Saturday, May 30, 2009. She was born in Chandler on Sept. 25, 1930 to the late Harold and Helen Deane. She married Wendell P. Hurst on June 3, 1956, and he preceded her in death. She graduated from Boonville High School in 1947 and received her B.S. in English and library science from Indiana University in 1951 and her M.S. in education from I.U. in 1975...

The Putnam County Public Library will host an "Artist Studio" each Friday at 3:30 p.m. throughout June and July for young adults ages 12 to 18. Local artists will talk about their work and show teens how to express themselves to create similar art. A Greencastle man convicted of eight residential robberies and robbery attempts that took place between December 2007 and July 2008 has been sentenced to prison time for the crimes. BAINBRIDGE -- A Bainbridge teenager died in a one-vehicle crash on C.R. 800N Tuesday when his pickup careened off the side of the road and overturned in three feet of water at the bottom of an embankment.
