The North Putnam Youth Baseball League will hold signups beginning Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be additional signup date from Feb. 17-19 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The cost for players aged five through 12 us $65 per player for registration. The fee is due at the time of registration and includes player uniform shirt, pants, socks, cap, memory mate photo and trophy...

MONROVIA -- The South Putnam freshman boys' basketball team fell to Monrovia 36-24 Wednesday. Aaron Parker led the way with 12 points, followed by Nick Scott with six and Kinser Franklin and Logan Pell with 12.

GREENCASTLE -- With the girls' sectionals less than a week away, county rivals North Putnam and South Putnam met for one final tune-up. Thomas E. Webb, 81, of Roachdale died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born Oct. 4, 1928 in Montgomery County, the son of Howard and Helen French Webb. Mr. Webb had been a salesman for Mid-States Wire and Keystone Manufacturing in Crawfordsville and had farmed and raised saddle and trotter horses...

James Michael Shaughnessy, 74, died at Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 in Brazil. He was born Jan. 12, 1936 in Putnam County to George and Izma Shaughnessy. Mr. Shaughnessy retired from CSX Railroad where he worked as an agent-telegrapher and later as a brakeman conductor for 29 years. ...

Elizabeth Heretta Crawford, 94, of Greencastle died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at the Mill Pond Health campus. Born Aug. 28, 1915 in Cloverdale, she was the daughter of Lewis and Emma McCoy Green. She had attended Cloverdale schools. She married Charles Crawford on Dec. 31, 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1981...

Greencastle City Hall will be hosting a Colts tailgate party today from 11a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be free hot dogs, popcorn and Colts Kool Aid for those who wear Colts blue, grey or white. There will also be a special cake made just for the occasion...

ROACHDALE -- Once again, concerned parents, teachers, staff and administrators filled the auditorium at North Putnam High School Thursday night to hear what school board members had to say about reduction in force issues. Board President Andy Beck opened the meeting telling the audience of the resignation of Dale McGaughey from the board. He said applications would be accepted from persons interested in serving on the board...

As I write this, it's unclear if there will even be any Putnam County high school basketball played tonight. (I'm betting no.) All the same, if we get hoops action, then I'll be headed for Speedway High School to see the Cloverdale boys battle the host Sparkplugs. With a victory, the Clovers will clinch a share of the West Central Conference crown...

With the early dismissal of all four county school corporations, all county sporting events scheduled for this are either canceled or have already been played Thursday evening.

Shades of Red, a benefit for the Putnam County Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation department, will still be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Walden Inn conference center. The event will focus on women's risk for heart disease. There will be 20 local high school students modeling red formal dresses compliments of Martin's Emporium...

Putnam County Jail Kevin M. Bain, 24, Cloverdale, was booked into the Putnam County Jail at 4:07 p.m. Thursday for violation of probation. Candace J. Benson, 50, Greencastle, was booked at 6:37 p.m. Thursday for possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle while intoxicated...

Barbara L. Bernsee, 84, Mission Viejo, Calif., died early Thursday morning at Parkview Terrace in Rancho San Margarita, Calif. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Belle (Rhoades) Grassman and was a longtime resident of the Chicago suburbs of Maywood and Broadview before moving to California...

Willard Lee Masten, 77, of Greencastle died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at the Putnam County Hospital. He was born in Bainbridge on Nov. 23, 1932, the son of Cyril and Adele (Modlin) Masten. He was an accountant at IBM for 31 years retiring in 1987, and was a member of New Life Baptist Church and served as the church treasurer for 10 years...

A recorded message sent to parents this morning at about 7:30 a.m. alerted parents that Greencastle Community School Corp. buses would not be running on gravel roads today. Superintendent Robert Green said "due to freezing overnight," students who lived on stone and gravel roads would not be picked up. Green apologized for the late notice, saying he had just been contacted by the school's transportation department...

Putnam County planner Kim Hyten contacted the Banner Graphic Friday evening saying Putnam County is under a level 2 snow emergency. A level two warning means conditions threaten public safety. Only essential traffic is recommended, such as to and from work and for emergency situations...

All Putnam County schools will be dismissing students early today. Elementary schools in the Greencastle Community Schools Corp. will dismiss students at 12:50 p.m. Students at Greencastle High School and Middle School will be released at 1:10 p.m. All athletic events that were originally scheduled for tonight for Greencastle High School teams took place Thursday...
