A team from DePauw University emerged the winner of the Bioethics Bowl debate tournament, which took place at the National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference over the March 23-24 weekend at the University of Denver. The DePauw squad -- comprised of senior Bethany Buis, Bryan Edwards, Mohammad Usman, junior Ben Hoffman and sophomore Cole Rodman -- won all six of its matches...

Last weekend's Rotary District 6560 conference in French Lick was already supposed to be the crowning achievement for Ginger Scott's 2011-2012 Rotary year. In chairing the conference, Scott oversaw the details of Rotary's "March Mania" theme, planning, delegating and remaining a calm influence on her fellow workers...

Of Rotary's 1.2 million worldwide members, very few can possibly take the organization's motto of "Service Above Self" more seriously than Tom Graffis. As a 47-year Rotarian who remains one of the Greencastle Rotary Club's most faithful and active members, Graffis was an easy choice for the club's inaugural inductee into the District 6560 Hall of Fame...

A common insult aimed at someone trying to accomplish something in the public realm these days is to say: "He's playing politics with the issue." And if you want to disparage a policy decision? "It was political." Or dismiss an action as barely worth discussing? "Oh, that's just politics."...

To the community: Many months ago (feels like years ago ...) my life changed at 32 years old when I was diagnosed with stage two papillary thyroid cancer. This diagnosis caused extreme disruption in my ability and stability to sustain life as I, and my three children, knew it. It's been a tough couple of months for people who cherish the good old days. Hostess Twinkies are no longer being manufactured, the company having filed for bankruptcy. Those tasty treats bring back memories of my elementary school days when I would always bring a package to school, eat one Twinkie, and then trade the other to the class sweet-freak, Alan Guggenheim. In exchange, he let me look at his papers during math tests. My grades went way up. So did Alan's cholesterol...

Greencastle is fortunate that its older homes have been so finely preserved with character and integrity. That's the message John Warner left with the Heritage Preservation Society (HPS) Wednesday evening during its annual meeting at the Putnam County Museum...
