NEW WINCHESTER -- The Whitestone Food Pantry will have a food distribution 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 15. Distribution is geared to needy residents in Floyd Township, Putnam County and Marion Township, Hendricks County. County Jail A number of people have been booked into the Putnam County Jail recently. At 11:15 a.m. Justin Lee Groler, 20, Crawfordsville, was lodged at the jail for probation violation. At 12:50 a.m. Amy Dawn Hutcheson, 37, Greencastle, was booked in for probation violation...

BRAZIL -- The NPHS Lady Cougar golfers greatly improved their team score by shaving 21 strokes since losing to Greencastle a week ago. While still waiting for their fifth player to join the team, the Lady Cougars are consistently dropping strokes in practice and are beginning to take on a more focused approach to the game...

The Greencastle girls' golf team lost to North Montgomery 187-227 Monday. Kenzie St. Marie led the Tiger Cubs with a 47. Liz Johnson and Lauren Bridgewater both shot in the 50, carding 57 and 58, respectively. Lokysa Scheuermann shot a 65 and Haley Cash added a 71...

MONROVIA -- The Greencastle boys' soccer team kicked off its season with a 2-1 win over Monrovia Monday Nick Tharp scored a big second half goal to tie the game at 1-all after Monrovia's Zach Langlais scored earlier in the half. The contest ended in the 1-all tie and went to a shootout...

DANVILLE -- The Cloverdale volleyball defeated Danville in three sets Tuesday 27-25, 25-17 and 25-17 to open its season. Leading the Clovers were Paige Gruener and Taylor Jones with eight points each, followed by Rebekah Jordan with seven. Bradanne Toney added six, with Bristy Skiles chipping in four and Jessica Winder adding four. Lindsay Robson and Adrianna Patterson had two points each...

The North Putnam High School Athletic Department will be hosting its annual golf outing on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Clover Meadows Golf Course. This year the 18 hole golf scramble will be held in conjunction with homecoming weekend. As in the past, teams will consist of a four person team at a cost of $50 per person or $25 per student, which includes lunch, green fees, golf carts and prizes for the golf event...

Last season, Greencastle's girls' soccer squad got thumped by Tri-West 17-0. In opening with the Bruins for the 2012 season, the Tiger Cubs were a far more impressive bunch but could not find a way to goal in falling 4-0. Tri-West opened the scoring nine minutes into the first half after Greencastle goalkeeper Amelia Smith could only turn a save from Cary Brown into the path of Abby Meyers, who tapped in from two yards out...

South Putnam's girls' golf squad hosted Cloverdale at Oak Ridge Golf Course in a one-on-one WCC showdown Monday night. The Eagles narrowly held the home course advantage after nipping the Clovers by a 206-208 score. Sydney Shum took medalist honors with a round of 40. MaKayla Moore added a score of 53, followed by cards of 57 from Anna Spencer and 58 from Harlee Fuetter...

BRAZIL -- Opening their 2012 volleyball season against a veteran and talented Northview squad proved a bit too much for Greencastle on Tuesday evening. Returning most of the weapons from a 31-win season last year, the Knights overpowered the Tiger Cubs from the beginning in claiming a 25-3, 25-10, 25-13 victory...

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present "Is There a Doctor in the House?" Sunday, Aug. 19, beginning at 8 p.m. in Forest Park at Brazil. The free concert is staged rain or shine. The special-edition performance recognizes members of the BCB who have earned the title of doctor through advanced degrees in medicine, jurisprudence and various educational fields...

While CSX is working to repair the railroad crossing on U.S. 36 in Bainbridge, traffic has been diverted through town for the past two days. CSX crews worked on the road near the tracks to replace the rail ties and smooth out the crossing.

CLOVERDALE --The building project at Cloverdale Schools is well on its way as the Cloverdale school board accepted two different bids for the project on Monday evening. The board was presented with several bids from project manager Dan Sulkoske, but chose to go with C.E. Reeve with a total of $318,000 for the elementary school and Danco with a total of $435,000 for the high school...

More signs of work on the Stellar Communities Grant are showing up in downtown Greencastle, with crews from Advanced Restorations beginning work on downtown façades. On Tuesday, sheet metal was stripped off the building at 25 W. Franklin St., revealing masonry, doors and windows that have not seen the light of day for decades. The building currently serves as the office of Brent Mather of Brenner Design, who is overseeing the façade project...

Ricky Lewis Hinkle, age 64, of Greencastle, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012 at his residence. Born April 23, 1948 in Greencastle, he was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Eugene and Sylvia Maria (Perry) Hinkle. He had attended Greencastle High School and Indiana University...
