Keeping the memories of the Deadeyes alive is a labor of love for one our WWII veterans and his daughter. It is their mission to collect Deadeye stories and tributes to the fallen and honor their sacrifices. This Deadeye 96th US Army Infantry Division is a crack combat unit that served valiantly in the Pacific Theatre. With over 16,000 men, they landed with General Douglas MacArthur on Leyte in October of 1944 and after that they invaded Okinawa April 1, 1945 with Lt. General Simon Buckner...

To the Editor: I would like to thank everyone who participated in our Girl Scout Dark in the Park on April 26. It was a great time and a great turnout with 165 participants from our community. You helped us raise $1,000 for camp and we appreciate it very much...

To the Editor: It was another successful year for the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. We collected around 3,100 pounds of food. I would like to thank all those involved. CLAYTON -- The wonderful two-week run for the Cloverdale softball team came to an end on Thursday with an 11-0 five-inning loss to Cascade in the Sectional 44 championship game. For the team's two seniors, though, the fairy tale story end of the season is more of a "Once upon a time ...." than a "... happily ever after."...

SPEEDWAY -- The South Putnam baseball team put together a seventh-inning rally against Covenant Christian on Friday, but the comeback attempt came up one run short. The Sherwood Christian Church recently held a Spring Fling community event, which included a craft show, carnival games and activities for families. From the money that was brought in, the church was able to present Judy Miller and the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry with a check. Sheriff's Department At 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, Derrick S. Henry, 20, Kokomo, was traveling southbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 350 North in a 1999 Chevrolet. Henry told Sgt. Jon Chadd that he veered to the right to avoid an oncoming vehicle that traveled left of center into his lane. Henry then struck a guardrail on the west side of the roadway to avoid a collision...

Following recent good news of future employment additions on the horizon for at least two Greencastle factories, the most current jobless figures also present a positive sign for the local community. While forthcoming expansion projects for both Heartland Automotive and Chiyoda USA won't figure into employment numbers for several months or more, the latest Putnam County jobless rate dropped by a point and a half in the recently released April figures...

Memorial Day services at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle are set for 10 a.m. on Monday. Honor guards from VFW Post 1550 and American Legion Post 58 will perform the annual memorial service. Flags have already been placed on the graves of all veterans buried in the cemetery in preparation for the day of remembrance...

CLOVERDALE -- A fire that engulfed a house on County Road 1200 South outside of Cloverdale has left one young man dead. The blaze started Thursday at around 9:20 a.m. at 3992 E. CR 1200 South. The sheriff's department and fire departments were dispatched to the house at 9:36 a.m. Witnesses who first saw the fire told police that they had knocked on the door to see if anyone was in the home, but they received no answer...

Dustin Lee Stout, 19, of Cloverdale, passed away on May 23, 2013. Born March 19, 1994 in Greencastle, he was the son of Kerry and Wendy (Smith) Stout and was home schooled, a senior about to graduate. Survivors include his parents; sister Holly Stout; grandparents Richard and Ginger Stout of Greencastle and Arnold and Betty Smith of Greencastle; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins...
