The deadline for hunters to apply for this year's state park deer reduction hunts is Aug. 25. Hunters must apply online by visiting Hunting.IN.gov and clicking on the "Reserved Hunt Info" link. Paper applications are not available. Deer reduction hunts reduce the ecological damage that deer herds cause in state parks by helping to maintain deer browsing at a sustainable level. Biologists determine which parks require a reduction each year based on plant recovery and previous hunter success...

Greencastle senior Dustin Williams is used to getting attention. Throughout most of his life, whenever he walks into a room, he's going to get noticed. At 6-2, 270 pounds, he's kind of hard to miss. "Off the field, you walk in and everyone is staring at you because you're the big guy and think, 'Don't mess with him,'" Williams said. "On the field, you've got a lot of other big guys around you so it's just, who is the best? You can get lost in between them."...

Fadie "Peggy" Beatrice Hargett, 85, of Pageland, S.C., died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. She was the daughter of the late John Buford Steen and Nora Belle Steen. Ms. Hargett was preceded in death by her husband, James Wade Hargett, and daughter Martha Sue Hargett Plyler...

The Cloverdale girls' golf team played its first road match of the season on Tuesday, traveling to Crawfordsville. MaKayla Moore led the Clovers with a career-best round of 46. "I was pleased with our first performance away from home," Langdon said. "This course had a lot of potential trouble and our girls, for the most part, did a good job of avoiding it. ... One day after a gasoline-price website reported that the largest single-day pump price jumps in the United States have occurred in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis this summer, Greencastle went them a couple cents better Wednesday. While several local stations, including the pumps at Kroger, listed regular unleaded gas at $3.26 a gallon on Tuesday, the pump price jumped to $3.65 at many of those stations by mid-day Wednesday...
