An alert Kroger clerk and a persistent Greencastle police chief helped a local woman save face and $2,000 after she appeared on the verge of falling victim to one of the most enduring scams around. A local grandmother was about to kiss $2,000 goodbye recently as she waited at the Kroger customer service counter, trying to obtain a cashier's check. She intended to send that check off to extricate her grandson from trouble somewhere in Canada, Cancun or Cucamonga...

James W. Phipps, 69, of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013. Born Nov. 13, 1943 in Bloomington, he was the son of Homer and Estella (Cole) Phipps and was a 1961 graduate of Van Buren High School. He continued his education, graduating from DePauw and Indiana universities...

The Greencastle girls' soccer teams welcomed Cascade to its home field and fell to the Cadets 2-0 on Saturday. The girls lost the first game 2-0, a thriller until the very end. The girls had crisp passing and their defense was very good the entire game...

The boys game was a different story. It was a close game throughout and the Tiger Cubs almost pulled it out in two overtimes but lost on a last second shot 2-1. Neither team scored in the first half but even so, it was very entertaining. The real treat was in the second half...

Warren "Shorty" Beaman Sr., 69, of Cataract (Spencer), passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013. He was born June 18, 1944, the son of the late Willard Beaman and Mary Elizabeth Snider. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Becky (Berger) Beaman; two daughters, Jessica (David) Hipps, Cloverdale, and Sarah (Christopher) O'Neal, Indianapolis; three sons, Warren Beaman Jr., George, Jeff Beaman, Georgia, and Greg (Serita), Georgia; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Beth (David) Brown, Mecca, Ind.; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.. ...

The Putnam County Food Pantry benefited from the community's spirit of friendship this past week. During Friendship Day Sept. 11 community members were asked to bring a canned good when they got their flowers, as a result the food pantry recieved a hefty donation of food and money.
