A westbound Chrysler PT Cruiser crosses over a traffic counter as it passes the south side of the courthouse square in Greencastle Tuesday evening. The traffic counters sprang up along U.S. 231 in at least three locations earlier in the day. However, before residents envision some ulterior motive for the devices, an Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman explained that the counters have been put down to routinely obtain average daily traffic counts.
