Area 30 board decides on dates for next calendar

Thursday, June 8, 2006

The dates are set in stone now.

On Tuesday, four of the six Area 30 career Center board members approved the school's proposed 2006-07 school calendar.

"Everything pretty much matches up," Area 30 Assistant Director Lora Wood told the four board members at Tuesday's meeting.

Board members Marsha Turner-Shear (Spencer-Owen Community Schools) and Dan Schroeder (South Putnam Community Schools) were not at Tuesday's meeting.

The first student day for the vocational school is scheduled for Aug. 15. Teacher orientation is scheduled for Aug. 14.

The first semester of the upcoming school year has 87 student days and 88 teacher days while the second semester has 96 teacher days and 93 student days.

The upcoming school calendar calls for no students on Labor Day (Sept. 4), fall break (Oct. 19-20), Thanksgiving break (Nov. 23-24), Christmas break (Dec. 21, 2006-Jan. 1, 2007), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 15), Presidents Day (Feb. 19), and spring break (March 26-30).

In addition, afternoon students are not scheduled to be at Area 30 on Nov. 11, Feb. 2, and April 13.

Students are scheduled to report for the second semester on Jan. 3 while Jan. 2 has been scheduled as a teacher records day.

The end of the 2006-07 school year at Area 30 is set for May 22.

Meanwhile, Tuesday's meeting was the last for Eminence Community School Supt. Norm Stockton.

Area 30 Executive Director Michael Walton told Stockton he had a plaque on order for him but was unable to get it for Tuesday's meeting.

"I want to thank Norm for his many years of service on the board," Walton said of Stockton, who has been on the Area 30 board since 1997. "I appreciate your effort and dedication."

In other business, the board:

-- Approved a new vocational program for South Putnam High School. Wood said the program, career planning internship, will be put in the Area 30 inventory and is now funded because the teacher for the program is now licensed.

-- Unanimously approved a technology lease resolution. The resolution will allow Walton to open up finance bids for computers at the school for the next three years. Walton said the bids are due back July 15.

-- Approved by a 4-0 vote that Gary Thomas be added to summer maintenance from May 30-Aug. 11.

-- Approved financial reports for June.

-- Approved the Area 30 treasurer, under the direction of Walton, to shift funds to close out the budget.

-- Approved two North Putnam Community School Corporation staffers to attend the careers conference with Area 30 representatives in Phoenix. Guidance Counselor Kay Grove and NPHS Principal Alan Zerkel will attend. Walton said North Putnam will reimburse Area 30 through a careers grant.

-- Heard an update on the recent NACTEI Conference Walton attended.

"It was a nice conference," Walton told the board. "There were a lot of breakout sessions. It was really interesting."

-- Heard an update on the school's handbook. Wood said the center would have a sheet of proposed changes ready for the board at its July meeting.

The board meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month. However, its July meeting has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 7.
