Man dies after tank explodes

A Fillmore man has died due to injuries he suffered in a propane tank explosion Thursday.

According to local officials, Richard L. Stewart, 73, was attempting to open a propane tank with a hammer when the tank exploded at 2:30 p.m.

Stewart sustained burns on 90 percent of his body. He was transported via helicopter to Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indianapolis, where he was later pronounced dead.

Fillmore Volunteer Fire Department, Putnam County Sheriff's Department and Operation Life were also on the scene.

No information on funeral arrangements for Stewart were available as of presstime.
