Saturday, February 4, 2006

SPEEDWAY -- Bruce Cook and the Cloverdale High School girls' basketball team ended the 2005-06 West Central Conference schedule Friday with a 62-46 lost to Speedway.

The Sparkplugs entered the game on a 10-game win streak, and hit the floor running.

Speedway got the best of the Clovers in the first quarter, outscoring them, 19-12, but it was the second quarter that really hurt Cloverdale.

Speedway came out in the second quarter determined to clinch the top spot in the conference. The Sparkplugs only gave up six points in the second quarter while posting 14 of their own.

At the half, Speedway led 33-19.

Speed-way controlled the first two quarters of the game, but at the start of the third, all of that changed.

Cloverdale came back a different team. The Clovers scored the first basket of the quarter when Emily Puffer nailed a jump shot for two. The Clovers later went on a 7-0 run. Cloverdale posted their best quarter performance in the third, outscoring the Sparkplugs 15-9.

The Clovers got within six points of the lead in the third quarter, but could not pull ahead.

In the last quarter, Speedway finished what they started. Speedway outscored the Clovers 20-13 for the final.

Ashley Koosman and Hannah Monnett paced the Clovers with 11 each, while Puffer chipped in five points. Kristen Schroer had two and Ashley Arnold had three points. Heather Moon scored six points and Kristin McCammon had one point.

The Clovers are back in action on Thursday when they take on Monrovia in the first round of the Cascade Sectional.
