Tigers take down Chicago on gridiron

CHICAGO -- After scoring on its first two possessions Saturday, the DePauw University football squad cruised to its third win of the season, downing Chicago on the road 31-6.

DePauw had a 31-0 lead through three quarters Saturday en route to the win.

The Tigers' defense limited the 10-ranked Division III offense to just 212 yards in the victory. Chicago dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

DePauw gained 305 yards of total offense in the win, 176 of which came through the air. Quarterback Spud Dick was 10-of-15 or 124 yards while Abe Winkle completed 5-of-10 passes for 52 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Mulligan in the second quarter.

Jeremiah Marks led the DPU rushing attack with 83 yards on 18 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers opened the game with a 10-play, 57-yard drive capped by Tyler Mallory's 35-yard field goal with 9:28 left in the quarter.

Chicago fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and after a 14-yard run by Marks, the Tigers made the score 10-0 when Dick scored on a 1-yard keeper.

The Tigers extended their lead to 24-0 in the third quarter after Marks' 7-yard scamper and put the game out of reach with 9:00 left in the third period following a 2-yard run by Dorrius Ford.

Chicago scored its only points in the fourth quarter when Nick Schey scored from one yard out. Schey led the Chicago rushing attack with 63 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, Eric Lewis and Andy Brandstatter both had 11 tackles to pace the Tigers. Lewis and Greg Sylvester both had interceptions and Dustin Hertel recorded two quarterback sacks.

The Tigers will continue Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday at home when Sewanee comes to town for Old Gold Day. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
