Crawfordsville tops Cougars

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

BROWNSBURG -- The North Putnam High School gilrls' soccer team saw its season come to an end Monday as it fell to Crawfordsville in the first round of the Brownsburg Sectional, 8-0.

The Cougars tallied just four shots on goal in the game and surrendered 14 to the Athenians.

"We didn't play well," North Putnam coach Scott Spencer said after the match. "It's frustrating that we didn't do right the things we can do right. We didn't play our best game tonight."

Crawfordsville got to work early, scoring its first goal with 37:29 remaining in the first half as Laura Perry kicked the ball to Hannah Spencer, who bounced it off of her head and into the net to make it a 1-0 contest.

The Athenians scored three more goals in the first half, all in the span of just more than six minutes to take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.

"We didn't talk about a lot at halftime," Spencer said. "They knew they had to come out with more energy, and to some extent they did. We played a little better in the second half and gave ourselves a few more opportunities."

But it was the Athenians who took advantage of their opportunities, striking early again. Megan Mummert scored an unassisted goal for Crawfordsville with 37:13 on the clock in the second half.

Spencer scored again with 25:14 to go in the contest on an assist from Mummert to make it a 6-0 game.

Spencer completed the hat trick with 23:14 left in the match when she scored her third goal, and Ana Vazquez put the game away with 14:17 to go to send the Athenians into the sectional's second round and to send the Cougars home for the season.

North Putnam goalkeeper Ashley Finchum tallied six saves in the game, and senior Brook Miller fired all four of the Cougars' shots on goal in the game.

In addition to being the end of the season, Monday's match also marked the end of five high school soccer careers, as the Cougars' seniors played their final match for North Putnam.

The Cougars said goodbye to Chelsea Greene, Sarah Crosby, Danielle Knoblett, Miller and Ashley Summerlot.

"It's a great group, and we're going to miss them a lot next year," Spencer said. "Most of them have been starting for three seasons now, and they've brought us to the level we're at now."

The Cougars finished the season 10-6-1.
