GHS girls fall to Danville in soccer
Cloverdale and South Putnam will both send their girls' cross country teams to regional competition on Saturday after they finished in the top five of the South Putnam sectional Tuesday.
Plainfield was the top team in the competition, followed by Brownsburg and Avon. Cloverdale collected 118 points for fourth place, followed by South Putnam in fifth with 136 points.
The Greencastle girls' team finished seventh overall, with North Putnam placing eighth.
Individually, Greencastle's Bethany Schroeder was the top county finisher, running the 4,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 9 seconds for 11th place. She was followed by Cloverdale's Cheslie Haltom in 12th with a time of 17:12.
"I thought Chelsie Haltom did well today," Cloverdale Coach Sam Brown said. "She ran today better than she did on Saturday."
Brown added he was happy the team gets to advance to the regionals.
"I thought our girls ran well and competed well against the bigger schools," he said.
Greencastle Coach Mike Schimpf said he was pleased with the performance of the GHS girls' team.
"They went out and gave it their best. I'm pleased that Bethany gets to move on," he said of Schroeder's regional qualification. "Maybe she has a chance to advance out of the regionals."
North Putnam Coach Jason Chew said his girls' team worked hard this year, and he's pleased with their improvement throughout the season.
South Putnam Coach Andy Wise said he knew Danville--which finished sixth overall--would present a challenge for a top-five placing.
"We knew Cloverdale would be in there competing," he said, "and we knew there were three teams competing for two of the top five spots."
South Putnam's Cassie Davis was the top finisher for the Eagles. She crossed the line in 22nd place, and was followed by Cloverdale's Brynlea Mattocks in 23rd and Caitlyn Croan in 24th. Megan Robinson ran in 38th with Jessica Thompson in 40th and Meghan Canary in 49th.
Other Clover team finishers were Jenna Lewis in 27th, Alyssa Williams in 29th and Ashley McCallie in 30th. Holly Roberson ran 42nd.
For Greencastle, Sara Culler crossed the line in 32nd, followed by Andrea Hayden in 47th, Katie Trigg in 51st, Alicia Sims in 53rd, Emma Hazel in 57th and Hilary Schroeder in 58th.
