On senior night, the Greencastle girls' varsity soccer team defeated Monrovia, 2-0. The win improves the Tiger Cubs' record to 11-5 on the season.

Despite Greencastle maintaining possession for the majority of the game, Greencastle coach Maurice McKee said he was impressed with the Bulldogs performance.

"They've come along way," he said. "Their goalie was on target last night. Next year they're going to be a contender."

The match was scoreless much of the first half. Being senior night, McKee let all of his seniors and their siblings start the match. This is something he said he likes to do in honor of their efforts.

"That was nine out of the 11 on the field," he said. "Every year, if possible, I will try to do that on senior night."

Greencastle sophomore Jamie Patterson scored the first goal of the match, rebounding a fellow teammates' shot to knock in the first goal of the game with approximately 13 minutes remaining in the half.

The second half went scoreless for much of the 40 minutes, until Crystal VanArsdale scored the second and final goal for the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle maintained offensive possession for most of the contest, with Tiger Cub defenders thwarting any Bulldog attack. Although Greencastle only scored two goals in the contest, the Tiger Cubs controlled the pace throughout.

"Defensively, I'm very pleased with all my defense," McKee said. "Jamie Grivas is always all over the place. Stopper Rachel Woodall takes probably 90 percent of the balls out of the air."

The Tiger Cubs had 20 shots on goal in the game, while Monrovia only had a mere six. Goalkeeper Kristen Ness had six saves in the match. As a senior, McKee said she will be sorely missed.

"I'm really going to miss her," McKee said. "I've had her four years now."

The win comes as the sectional tournament approaches next Saturday. Greencastle plays the winner of the Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South match Saturday Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. With more than a week of preparation, McKee has mixed feelings about his team's break of play.

"For injury sakes and resting up, it's going to be great," he said. "For keeping the girls sharp, that's going to be an interesting situation for me as a coach."

Greencastle defeated Terre Haute North in the regular season, but lost to Terre Haute South, 2-1. McKee said those games mean nothing now.

"That was during regular season," he said. "You just kind of throw regular season out during sectional."
