For the second straight year, Andy Weatherford walked away from South Putnam the West Central Conference cross country champion.

"I'm really feeling confident right now. For a while I wasn't too confident of myself because I was out for 10 days and couldn't run, but breaking the 15's today before sectional is a real confidence booster," he said.

Weatherford won the race with a time of 15:52, finishing near 40 seconds faster than second place.

Weatherford was just one of the four county runners that walked away with WCC champions. Chelsie Haltom continued her season dominance, winning the girls' varsity race with a time of 17:01 while Robbie Randall won the boys' junior varsity race in 19:38 and Megan Robinson won the girls' junior varsity race in 21:37.

The Tiger Cubs proved to be the dominant team in the boy's race, scoring a low of 27 points for the win. South Putnam came in second with with a score of 84 while Cloverdale came in third with 91. Monrovia finished fourth with 95 and Cascade took home fifth with a score of 104. Speedway came in sixth with 111 points and North Putnam finished in seventh with 174 points.

Behind Weatherford's first-place finish, the Tiger Cubs took the the second and third place spots with David Brooks coming in second at 16:37 and Mark Jedele finishing third in 16:53. Camron Humphreys continued the Greencastle top 10 finishers with a sixth-place finishwith a time of 17:52.

"I'm real proud of these guys, " GHS coach Mike Schimpf said. "They all ran well and they continue to exceed my expectations. We also had nearly everybody on the varsity and junior varsity teams set personal records."

Greencastle wasn't the only county school in the top 10, South Putnam got in with Bo Jackson's fourth place finish at 17:23. Cloverdale's Craig Blair represented the Clovers, finishing seventh with a time of 17:55 and Gerrit Graff wrapped up the top 10 for Cloverdale with a 10th place finish in 18:18 to make the All-WCC team.

The Cougars were represented by Korey Cooper who finished 35th with a strong time of 21:10 while his teammate came in behind him at 37th with a time 21:33 and C.J. Werner came in 38th at 21:37. Jordan Davidson finished things up for North Putnam with a 39th place finish at 21:39.

In the girls varsity race, it was South Putnam who dominated.

The Eagles won the championship with a combined score of 26 while Cloverdale came in second with a 41 and Greencastle came in third with a 76. Speedway finished things up with a fourth place finish with 83 points. Cascade Monrovia and North Putnam did not have complete teams.

Haltom won the race for the Clovers, but it was South Putnam who had the most top 10 finishes. Shannon Egold came in second a 17:16 while Cassie Davis finished fourth with a time of 17:25 and Sarah Beasley came in fourth with time of 17:32. Caitlyn Croan finished in eighth with a time of 18:07 and Mary Earnest finished in 10th with a time of 18:20.

"These girls ran much better (Friday) than what they did on Tuesday and three of them set personal records," SPHS coach Andy Wise said. "We've been dropping our times for the past few weeks and that is what we want going into the sectional and I think we're ready for it."

Nine of the 10 members on the All-WCC team were from Putnam County schools. Bethany Schroeder represented Greencastle with a sixth-place finish in 17:41 and Brynlea Mattocks was the other Cloverdale runner, finishing in seventh with a time of 17:58. Mackenzie Pearson finished ninth for North Putnam with a time of 18:11.

All four schools will be back in action on Tuesday when they take part in the South Putnam Sectional at 4:30 p.m.
