DANVILLE -- The North Putnam wrestling team defeated both Danville and Speedway Thursday at Danville.

The Cougars beat Danville, 51-12, and Speedway, 57-18.

Leading the way for North Putnam, C.J. Spencer, Cody Newlin, A.J. Brewer, Alex Lance, Levi Elliot, Jacob Stigall and Emmett Boruff all were undefeated in the two meets.

Newlin and Boruff are 8-0 on the season, while Brewer, Elliot and Spencer all moved to 7-1 on the season.

The Cougars hit the mats again Saturday at the Monrovia Invitational at 9 a.m.

Tiger Cubs pin Vikings

On Thursday, the Greencastle High School varsity wrestling team defeated West Vigo, 18-6.

"We had good senior leadership out of Chase Dunigan and Kurt Cantonwine," GHS Coach Russ Hesler said. "Cantonwine bumped up a weight class for us."

Dunigan was the winner of the 275-pound class with a pin and extended his record to 4-0 while Cantonwine who usually wrestles in the 125-pound class bumped up to the 130-pound class and won with a pin making him 4-0 on the season.

Chad Nichols won the 135-pound class for the Tiger Cubs with a pin, improving himself to 3-1 on the season while Ty Buchanan added another win to his record when he won the 145-pound class with a pin, making him 3-1 as well. Chris Pingleton jumped to 4-0 in the season after pinning his opponent for the win in the 152-pound class while Robert Bittles claimed the win in the 160-pound class, moving him to 4-0 for the season.

Kyle Buchanan got his third win of the season, making him 3-1, when he won the 171-pound class with a pinfall. Ed Kidwell became 3-1 also after he won the 189-pound class with a pin.

"We matched up with them so our strengths went up against their strengths," Hesler said. "We didn't give up. We fought until the end and won. We showed a lot of heart."

The Tiger Cubs will be back in action on Thursday when travel to Southmont to grapple with the Mounties, starting at 6:30 p.m.

South Putnam splits varsity, junior varsity wins

The South Putnam High School varsity wrestling team grabbed a win Thursday, defeating Rockville, 72-6.

The Eagles won the majority of their matches by the way of forfeit, but when they did have somebody to wrestle, they proved that they are a team to be reckon with.

The Eagles only wrestled four matches and won them all with a pin. The match started with 145-pound class and so did the Eagles momentum. Jacob Parish took down his opponent and pinned him for the Eagles first win while Jon Parker stepped up next in the 152-pound class and won with a pin.

Jacob Snellenburger won the 275-pound class with another pin in less than a minute. Bo Jackson won the Eagles last match of the night with a pin in the 140-pound class.

In junior varsity action, the Eagles lost to North Montgomery 60-22.

The Eagles picked up four wins in their match. Hank Goldman won the 145-pound class with a pin and got things started for the Eagles. Eric Hunter followed up Goldman's win with one of him own in the 119-pound class. He pinned his opponent in 1:59.

Kody Terry won the 171-pound class with an 8-0 decision, and Hank Goldman wrapped things up for the Eagles with a win in 145-pound class.

"It was nice to pick up a win tonight," SPHS Coach Scott Miller said. "We showed considerable improvement since the start of the season. We still have a great deal to work on in order to compete at a higher level and succeed against strong competition."

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Monrovia for an invitational at 9 a.m.
