CLAYTON -- The North Putnam High School boys' basketball team did notopen up its West Central Conference season the way it had hoped.

The Cougars fell to the Cascade Cadets, 64-46, Friday in their first WCC match up of the season.

The Cadets jumped out to a huge lead in the first quarter, blowing up the scoreboard with 18 points while the Cougars were only allowed nine points for themselves. The boys' team had the same problem the as girls' team in not being able to get any shots to go in for them.

The second quarter proved different for North Putnam. Even though they only scored seven points, they held the Cadets to only nine points, to end the first half with score of 27-16.

"I thought we did a pretty descent job on Daugherty and Suter in the fist half but they kind of got away from us in the second half," NPHS Coach Wes Peek said.

Suter and Daugherty had a combined total of 33 with 21 of them coming in the second half.

The Cadets took back control of the game in the third quarter when they outscored the Cougars 13-9, but the Cougars luck changed in the fourth quarter.

North Putnam posted its best quarter in the fourth when it scored 21 points. Jack Mullis came through for the Cougars, hitting his two three-pointers of the night. Nine other points came from the charity stripe.

"When you only shoot 30 percent form the field and a little over 50 percent form the free throw line, its hard to win," Peek said. " We missed a lot easy lay ups and shots that we usually make."

The Cadets topped the Cougars 21 points, with 24 points of their own for the final.

Riley McGaughey paced the Cougars with 19 points while Mullis posted 14 points and Lee Fordice chipped in six points. Brayden Dahlstrom pitched in five points while Cory Fordice and Tyler Trent had one point each.

The Cougars are back in action today when they host Riverton Parke at 7:30 p.m.
