The Greencastle Tiger Cub boys' basketball team hosted the Rockville Rox Friday night, hoping to get back in the win column after a suffering disappointing loss to Sullivan last Saturday night.

The Rox would prove to be a challenge as they entered the game with a 3-1 season record.

However, the Tiger Cubs overpowered Rockville on both ends of the floor, soundly defeating the Rox, 87-73, and improving their season record to 3-3.

Greencastle's defense provided a challenge for the visitors from the beginning of the game, until the end.

The Tiger Cubs forced Rockville to commit seven turnovers in the first quarter and the offense was hitting on all cylinders.

The home team raced out to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter through balanced scoring and crisp ball movement that allowed Brennan Burks, Quinn Fenlon, Zac Remsburg, Erick Burgeson, and Cal Gard to score in the period.

The unselfish offense allowed six baskets generated from assists during the stanza.

The only bump in the road for the Tiger Cubs in the quarter came at the 2:59 mark when Burks was forced to the bench due to committing two quick fouls.

Zach Smiley came into the game for Burks and blocked the only shot of the game for the Tiger Cubs and stole a Rockville pass, before Burks returned to the game two minutes later.

Greencastle continued to open its lead over Rockville in the second quarter to 20 points, taking a 46-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Tiger Cubs stretched the lead to 29 points at the 1:44 mark in the third quarter at 69-40, and held an 84-61 lead with 4:00 left in the game when both coaches pulled their starters out of the game.

Statistics show that Greencastle dominated on both ends of the floor.

The Tiger Cubs' aggressive defense stole 16 of Rockville's passes versus six by the Rox.

Greencastle's offense allowed eight players to pass for a total of 27 assists, and the Tiger Cubs hit 56 percent of their shots from the floor, including 60 percent of their three-point shots on 15-of-25 shooting.

"Offensively, we hit our shots tonight, and that solves a lot of problems," said Greencastle Coach Troy Greenlee after the game.

"We have really been focusing on getting more player movement and ball movement on offense, therefore, getting guys open.

"We played better tonight and we've just got to continue to work to get better.

"We still have some things we want to get better at," added Greenlee.

Greencastle had four players who scored in double figures. Remsburg and Gard led the way with game-high 23 points each, Burks had 13, and Fenlon added 11.

Burgeson followed with nine, Michael Richardson had six, and Kendall Faust closed out the Tiger Cub scoring with two points.

Burks had a double-double by being the leading rebounder of the game with 10 caroms and Burgeson pulled-down six boards.

Gard had a game-high six assists and Remsburg and Richardson dished out five each.

Fenlon had a game-high four steals, and Remsburg, Richardson, Smiley, and Burks had two each.

In the junior varsity game, Greencastle improved its record to 3-1 by defeating the Rox, 45-31.

Drew Evens led the scoring with 19, followed by Ashton Marshall and Kendall Faust with seven each, Austin Miller added six, and Bo Walker, Eric Warren, and Blake Robinson closed out the scoring with two points each.

Next game -- The Tiger Cubs play Northview in the first round of the Wabash Valley Tournament on Tuesday afternoon, December 27th, at Terre Haute North. The game will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
