CLAYTON -- The South Putnam boys' basketball team dropped to 0-2 in the West Central Conference Wednesday after losing to Cascade 59-51.

The Eagles had a rough start in their second WCC game this season. The Cadets limited the Eagles' offense to only four points in the first period while posting 12 points.

The Eagles were able to bounce back in the second quarter with their offense, scoring 13 points led by Drew Christy and Matt Hicks who scored 11 points combined for South Putnam.

"Cascade's intensity in the first quarter was good and for what reasons mentally, we weren't in the right spots," SPHS Coach Kyle Brewer said.

Going into the half, Cascade led 27-17.

The Eagles came out in the second half swinging, putting up 12 more points on the boards while limiting the Cadets to 13. Christy led the offense once again in the third quarter, scoring another seven points while his teammate Greg Chestnut scored an additional five.

The last quarter of the game proved to be the best for the Eagles as they outscored the Cadets for the first time in the game, 22-19. Hicks, who went scoreless in the third quarter, took charge of the Eagles offense, scoring eight points. The Eagles got as close as one point of the lead in the fourth quarter with just a couple of minutes left, but were unable to pull through for the win.

Cascade's inside game continued to be overwhelming for the Eagles. The Cadets had 16 points in the paint, courtesy of A.J. Austin while their inside defense stopped the Eagles in their tracks. Kyle Foster also proved to be a problem for the Eagles defensively. He swatted down four of South Putnam's shots on the inside.

"Offensively, we did a lot of standing around and weren't mentally in the game," Brewer said. "Defensively, we had trouble with their two inside players and blocking out was a big part of the game. In the second half, I felt that they got to many loose balls."

Brewer has realized what some of the problems with the Eagles and hopes the upcoming break will help fix them

"Going into this break, our guys are mentally and physically tired. Some of them had played football in the fall and are tired still," he said. "They need to take these next four days to get some rest and spend some time with their families and get away some.

"And maybe we will get anther chance to play these guys again in our own tournament over the break."

The Eagles were paced by Christy who had 19 points while Hicks followed with 13 points. Chestnut pitched in seven points while Zach Rhine had five. Anthony Tomasino chipped four points.

The Eagles are now 3-3 on the season and 0-2 in the WCC and will be back in action on Dec. 29th as the host the Eagle Classic.
