Wellness walk gives update

Monday, November 6, 2006

Organizers of Putnam County's Walking for Wellness program have offered this update on the project:

* As of this week, 625 people from all parts of the county have registered to participate in the program. Organizers say they have been pleased to have people sign up from Russellville, Roachdale, Bainbridge, Fillmore, Reelsville, Cloverdale, DePauw and Greencastle.

* Putnam County citizens have reported walking a total of 23,486,501 steps, or 11,743 miles. The goal is to make it around the world, in terms of distance, by Dec. 31.

* The one-day total for the special Walk Across Indiana event conducted on Oct. 28 was 231,222 steps, or 115 miles.

Organizers say walkers have plenty of time to report their steps and report their weekly total by either e-mailing to: putnamwalks@purdue.edu or by calling 653-8411.

Walking for Wellness has two goals. One is for people to reduce their calorie intake by 100 calories each day and two is for them to walk 10,000 steps each day.
