Online greetings available for Veterans Day

Members of the local American Legion Post are asking the public to be aware of a free, easy way to thank men and women in the military for the service on the eve of Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The electronic greeting cards, available year-round, are also to thank all veterans of all generations who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

"In today's computer age, what better way to say thank you to a veteran or a service member serving thousands of miles from home than a musical greeting card with your personalized messages that will reach them almost instantly," said Paul A. Morin, national commander of the American Legion.

Anyone who has an e-mail address can receive the special cards. Creating the card is quick and easy at the American Legion's website at www.legion.org. The site offers e-mail cards representing each military service along with the service song that plays when the card is opened. Each card provides plenty of space to compose a personal message.

Cards can be sent through Nov. 12. They may be sent direct to active duty service personnel if their military e-mail addresses are known.

Student council helping injured troops in Iraq

The Student Council at Tzouanakis is observing Veterans Day by organizing a cell phone recycling fundraiser.

There's nothing to buy. The students are just asking their peers and community to help our troops and protect the environment by donating used digital cell phones. These donations will be recycled, refurbished or sold. All proceeds will help fund Student Council projects at TZ by earning between 50 cents and $300 per phone.

The council plans to use proceeds from this first project to purchase supplies for wounded soldiers in the Emergency Room in Iraq. Anyone unable to send a used cell phone but wanting to help the effort can send in new large or extra large pajama bottoms, large or extra large boxer shorts, travel size deodorant or flip flops.
